Happenings at A Place in Time on February 28, 2012

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Priscilla and I want to thank everyone who took the time to celebrate our store anniversary last weekend. It was a fantastic - fun time.  Each morning I thank God and our loyal customers for another day. Saturday began with a big surprise when Debbie and Darryl delivered a "Dragon Cupcake" they had made to start the celebration. Several of you were lucky to be able to sample their artistry. I sampled it several times. Ha! Everyone seemed to enjoy the paper fortune cookies and the surprises they held. Winning the cookie proved to be tougher than I thought it would be. I guess knowledge of dragons isn't common knowledge in Hawaii. What you didn't know was helped by our "phone a friend" or "store shout out" options. For those of you that are inquisitive, here are the answers to the trivia questions: The dragon in "The Hobbit" was Smaug; Wales has a red dragon in it's flag; St. George became the patron saint of England by slaying a dragon to save a maiden; A dragoness is a female dragon; A stork is the natural enemy of the dragon; Asian dragons are mythical rulers of rain and water; Dragon's breath is blue; A Chinese dragon has 5 toes. Each day of the three day celebration held it's own mini surprises. On Sunday we had a visit from Tiffany - she became a regular customer when our store first opened. We were sad to see her move when her husband was transferred to a base in Florida. It was fun to reminisce of times past. So many memories and the best part is the memories yet to be made.

You are also welcome to bring personal Ephemera, decorative papers, stamps, ink pads, and favorite images. For the print-making, feel free to bring items to create texture and patterns: feathers, leaves, bubble wrap, etc. A flyer is available at the front desk and covers all the details about the class. I expect a sample this week and I will post it to the next Blog.

Wednesday, March 28th - "Pineapple Express" - 6:30pm - 8:30pm by Priscilla Teska  Cost: $25.00, includes (1) Free stencil. This is a stenciling techniques class which will cover the following: Dry Embossing, Pasting, Gold Leafing, Mica Coloring, and Ink Pad coloring. If you're new to stenciling and want to learn or would like a refresher class, Priscilla is just the person to show you how. Tools that you will need to bring include double sided adhesive and a flat blade spatula. When you come into the store you can see the samples of the various techniques. I will also include them in my next Blog.

For those of you that "love" stencils you will really like what I have next. Dreamweaver has arrived in our store with "force". It took me on full day to process the shipment and get them on the shelves for display. You are not going to believe the size of the order. We had to dedicate one additional gondola to accommodate everything. There are brand new stencils in the Dreamweaver line, stencils that you haven't seen in years, and many of the "old faithfuls". Not to be out done, another box arrived and we are now resupplied in paste, tape, brushes, spatulas, foil, and soap. I guarantee you are going to have fun. Easter is just around the corner and there are several stencils you will enjoy.

Art has been utilizing the Air Brush and Copic pens to create some new images and cards. Lately he has been experimenting with layering stencils to get a "new look". Sue borrowed one of his creations (Easter egg and Dragon) and created the card I have for your review. If you haven't tried the air brush, you have to make the time. I guarantee you find it to be as easy as "The Big Shot".

For those of you have made our telescopic boxes, I have a sample that Byron designed. It's "cute as a bug" and I couldn't resist sharing the photo I took with you. Byron is making several of these for "Girl's Day" and we helped by cutting out the boxes on the laser for him. The use of Liquid Pearls add the perfect accent. Let us know if we can help cut down on your prep time by doing the cutting for you. Thank you Melanie for "talking" Byron into sharing.

Priscilla has been creating also. Recently she had to make a thank you card and she used her favorite image - "The Dragon" stencil from Dramweaver. Art did the airbrushing and Priscilla added the "flavor". I specially like the red ribbon she used as a border around the perimeter of the card.

Priscilla's Thank You Card
Make and Take it's are always a favorite of those that frequent our store. As a part of our store anniversary, Priscilla created a fun card for everyone to make. Butterflies, swirls, flowers, Swarovski crystals, and a lattice fold stencil are all used in making the card. Lots of laughs, fun, and the creative juices were flowing.

Lastly, we have designed three new stencils for St. Patrick's Day. The card I show below uses the new "Falling Shamrocks" stencil and the Catalina Border die from Memory Box for a little fun. You can also choose "Field of Shamrocks" (can you find the 4 leaf shamrock?) or the Set of 3. I think you will have fun with these new designs.

That's all for tonight..... Have a super day and I'll see you tomorrow

happenings at A Place in Time February 24, 2012

Good Afternoon Everyone,

This Blog entry is going to be a somewhat abbreviated one. I promised everyone that I would let them know when the Liquid Pearls and the new dies from Memory Box arrived. If I took the time to write about the events on our anniversary weekend, upcoming classes, new samples, etc. - the product would be sold out before I finish the Blog. I'm always in trouble, but I like to minimize it.

The Memory Box dies arrived on Wednesday (22nd) and I stocked the shelves that afternoon. They continue to be a popular item at A place in Time. Simply run the die through the Big Shot and you have a beautiful/elegant embellishment for your card or scrapbook page. It takes but 5 seconds to make. Priscilla brought in the popular designs from previous shipments and 4 new dies in their expanding product line. "Flower Mound", "Quinn Flourish", "Catalina Wreath", and "Catalina Border" will be a great addition to your collection. Some of them just "beg" to be used with the Liquid Pearls.

Priscilla brought in 17 colors for those of you that love "Liquid Pearls". Two of them, "Silver Pearl" and "White Opal", are repeats from previous order and are basic to anyones color palette. The new colors include several that have a metallic tone. One of my favorites is going to be "Onyx Pearl" (black). The other colors are "Avocado", "Copper Pearl", "Daffodil", "Dark Chocolate", "Gold Pearl", "Flamingo", "Hot Cocoa", "Hydrangea", "Ivy Garden", "Key Lime", "Majestic Purple", "Orchid", "Pumpkin", and "Royal Blue". If history proves true, the pearls will move quickly. They arrived on Thursday and I stocked the shelves before we opened on Friday morning. Maude almost met me at the door to be first in line. Most people will have a difficult time choosing the color to acquire - they're that nice.

That's all for now. The word is out and I expect a busy weekend. Wow, it's almost March. I've got to get busy making the new St. Patrick's Day stencils.

See you tomorrow,

Bill

Happenings at A Place in Time on February 12, 2012

Good Morning Everyone,

Today is our 2nd Sunday Make and Take It day. For those of you that don't know, we have a Free Make and Take It project on the 2nd Sunday of each month. I thought you might enjoy what Priscilla has designed for today's activity. You will use a Heart Pop-up Punch and ribbon to make a 3-D embellishment plus a fun Gift Card holder. If you didn't make it to today's activity, circle your calendar for March 11th. - the next Make and Take It Sunday.

Every once in a while someone comes into the store and says "you must have the best job in the world. You get to "play" and craft all day long". Well, that might be true if there wasn't all the paper work, bills to pay, and trying to figure out what product to bring into the store. And then there are the birds. Yes, I did say birds. Pigeons are everywhere in Hawaii and on rare occasions they find their way into the space above our drop ceiling in the store. It's a bit disconcerting to hear the pitter-patter of little feet on the ceiling. Now, I like pigeons, but they must be stupid to come into the store. Don't they know a Marine lives here? Who do think has to resolve this problem? The landlord? Priscilla? Menehune's? Nope - all fingers point to me. And Priscilla says "please don't hurt the bird". So here I am, going into a tight space trying to catch a bird that is rather suspicious of my intentions. Well, as you can see from the photo, I was successful. Fun? Oh Yeah! It's really fun around here at times.

Bird, Bird, the Bird is the Word

New product arrived in the store yesterday. Sizzix has provide you with new Embossing Folders: (Butterflies and Flowers) and (Peacocks and Leaves),  Framelits and Stamps: (Butterflies) and (Dragonflies), and Letterpress Plates: (Organic Flourish), (Festive Swirls), and (Ornate Trellis). I especially like the Framelits (diecuts you can use on your "Big Shot" machine) and Stamps. It gives a wide array of combinations you can use in your crafting. I am going to have fun with the samples for the store.

Fran's "Tropical Flair" class last Thursday night was fantastic. She does a wonderful job teaching and giving each student the individual attention as needed. The class was sold out almost before I posted it on the Blog. If you missed this class, Fran will be offering it again in March. (Wednesday, March 9th 6:30-8:30pm). I have the samples in the store and you can give me a call if you have any questions. As you can see from the photo's, Mark joined Byron in taking the class. For the guys out there that want to make a gift for that special someone in your life, there's no better way than to take a class.

Fran's Tropical Flair Class - sample 1 of  3

Fran's next class will be A Year in Cards - "Spring. The samples are being made and I will post them to the Blog as soon as I receive them. So, check your calendar, February 22nd 6:30 - 8:30pm the is date and time. The cost is $20.00. There is still room, but the class is filling quickly.

Last Saturday, Art and Priscilla held their first "Ecal Made Friendly" class. Melanie and Maude brought in their Eclips machines and computers - the goal was to learn how to weld letters and to make a "Slipper Box". As this software and the techniques were revealed you could hear the comments "Oh, that was easy or "I'm anxious to play with this when I get home". I should have taken a picture of Melanie's heart diecut with the scroll Love suspended between the inner edges of the heart. Great Job. Priscilla and Art will be offering this class again so let me know if you would like to be included.

Next, I have two samples of what our crafters are doing. First, using the Memory Box Butterfly diecut and layering it on a Graphic 45 paper (Rain Forest) you have a very beautiful card that would be suitable for any occasion. The butterfly gives the card a 3-D look - it's as if the butterfly is in it's natural habitat. Next, everybody in Hawaii enjoys the butterfly. The Butterflies shown below are diecuts using the Eclips machine. Layered on top of each other, they provide depth and different textures. I really like the offset ribbon that adds the perfect accent to the butterflies. Super job ladies. Keep the samples coming. If any of you would like to share what your doing you can can bring it in and I'll take a photo or you can e-mail it to me at wotsearch@hotmail.com.

Beautiful Layered Butterflies

Next weekend (February 18th - 20th) we will be celebrating our store anniversary at A Place in Time. Some of the details are under review, but I guarantee it will be a lot of fun for everyone. First, we will be playing "Dragon Trivia". It's the year of the dragon and watch out - Priscilla was born Year of the Dragon". You will be well rewarded with a correct answer. Don't know the answer? You can do a "Store Shout Out" or "Phone a Friend". Secondly, we will be having a Clearance Sale: A little bit of this and that - you won't believe the savings. 3rd, 4th, 5th ......etc There will be Make and Take Its, Demos, Mini Classes, and perhaps a few goodies to nibble on.

That's all for now..... enjoy this beautiful day and "I'll See You Tomorrow".
