Happenings at A Place in Time on August 23rd 2013

Aloha Everyone,

Does it seem like the days are getting shorter? I know they are and they are definitely getting hotter also. Have you ever heard the phrase "Dog Days of Summer" ?  Being as old as I am I have. Growing up in Portland, Oregon, my dad would always refer to the hot sultry days in August as the "dog days of summer" and no air conditioning meant it was hard to fall asleep at night. Do you know where the phrase comes from?
Like with most things it goes back to Roman times ( they had no a/c either) and the brightest star in the sky during the hot sultry months was the Dog Star. Hence the phrase. Knowledge should make you feel cooler at night.

Priscilla's class on coloring with the Copic pens was enjoyed by all. I walked into the class area a couple of times and everyone was so very quiet. They were intent on blending and pushing colors. I looked over their shoulders and images were fantastic. Everyone was doing very well. People will be surprised at the future cards that they make.

Green Eyes and beautifully blended red hair

Green Hair anyone

As I mentioned in my last Blog, Fran's class on August 31st is sold out. Once I get all of the samples I will Blog the photos. The cards that the students will be making include wood embellishments that we make with our laser. You may not be able to take the class, but we will be offering the embellishments for anyone that wants them.

Priscilla has set a date for her Mini Album class. I have the sample if you want to stop by and look at it. Priscilla has done an outstanding job designing and laying out the various pages. There are numerous pockets or hidden compartments that can mount photos or have a special message. Binding the Album is very easy. Just use your Cinch machine. If you don't have one, ask Priscilla or give me a call. We can acquire it for you. Mark your calendar for Sunday, September 8th - 9:00am - 5:00pm. Yes, it's an all day class so bring your "brown bag" for lunch. There are a couple of places near by that you can get something to eat also. The supplies that you'll need to bring - I'll tell you in my next Blog. It looks to me that all you'll need is a Basic Tool Kit. The cost is $47.00. The following are photos of a few of the pages that make up the album - The actual album is much better looking than my photos.

Beautiful Asian Lady

We have been very busy in the Laser den. Electrical labels for solar companies and electricians, wood name tags, and glassware. We may have the opportunity to engrave 700+ surfboards for the 200th Navy Ball. I never know what will be coming in for us to do. Everything comes to an end. Art Hiu, my compatriot in the Laser Den has decided to retire at the end of August. He has been a good friend and a vital part of our success. I hope he brings his models over to work on in the classroom area. Priscilla and I can not thank Art enough for his help over the last 8 years. Whatever came up, Art was always there to help.

If your thinking of having solar panels installed and want a recommendation please give me a call. Priscilla and I are very pleased having made the decision to install a photvoltaic system 4 months ago.

That's all for now. Have a great weekend.

Greetings from A Place in Time on August 15, 2013

Aloha Everyone,

It's a fine day at the Laser Den today. I thought you might like to see one of the cards that Fran will be showing her class how to make Saturday, August 31st. The class is full, but it still may give you an idea for a future project of your own. The embellishments we made with the laser and if you have questions regarding them you can give me a call.
Fran's  Card

Wood Embellishments

There is still a couple of spots left for Priscilla's class this Saturday (Aug. 17th). Take a look at my previous Blog for the details. You will bring color to your projects.

Priscilla is also putting together the finishing touches on a mini album that she will be teaching soon. Wow, I looked at the prototype last night and it's amazing. The color, the hidden pockets, the paper, the embellishments - it's beautiful. I will take some pictures and put it into my next blog along with the details of when, cost, time, etc.

That's all for now....Have a super day,

Happenings at A Place in Time on August 6th 2013

Aloha Everyone,

Wow, I didn't realize it had been that long since my last Blog entry. Time goes by quickly when your busy. And we have been very busy in the Laser Den. July was our best month ever and that includes all the previous years we were operating out of the Old Craig's Bakery. We feel very blessed indeed. It's bitter sweet because we miss the people and the excitement at the old place. Occasionally, we still get phone calls from people wondering where we moved to. Oh! did you hear? I drove by the old place the other day and there was a new sign in the window. It looks like the Kailua Lions Club is going to be moving into the store.

Classes:

First up:  The following is the info Priscilla wrote about her Copic Pen class on August 17th.

"Summer fun is just about over and school has begun, so let's play and color. I will be having a repeat Copic coloring skin and hair class on August 17th. Class starts at 1:00pm - 3:00pm.

Class Title: Let's Face It, Coloring can get Hairy
                Date:  Saturday, August 17th, 2013
                Fee:   $ 20.00\

I have a limited amount of pens (one color each) and encourage you to bring your pens (clearly marked with your name). It is best to have 3 pens of the same color family separated by 2 or 3 digits in numbers, ie.: B03, B05, B08. Although we are doing only skin and hair, it is the technique on how to apply color and if all you have are greens or G's, then you will have green people. It could be interesting.....

Supplies needed: Pen or pencil, Copic Sketch color markers E000, E00, E01, E11, E13, if you want Blondish hair bring Y's, Brownish hair bring E's, Black hair higher number W's and #100 Black. If you have only (1) number in the color, lets see if we can make it work with some color layering.

Coloring skin and hair seems to be challenging for most people, including me! This is what the class will concentrate on entirely. I have experimented with different color just because I (you can). All you are going to do is color, color, color! There is no cutting, no pasting, no assembly, just coloring and writing down what you are doing - bring something to write on.

There is limited seating ( 8 students ). Call Bill at 808-261-2882 to register."

                                               Priscilla Teska

Fran will be having a class on Saturday, August 31. Like all of her classes, this one is sold out. If there are any cancellations I will keep you informed. As soon as I get samples I will post them on the Blog. This class will have a Hawaiian theme. Fran and I are collaborating on wood cutouts that will be used as embellishments. You will color the wood to give it your individual flavor. We will also be packaging the wood embellishments in case you want them for future projects. I will let you know the list of materials you will need to bring as soon as Fran lets me know. The class will be from 1:30pm - 3:30pm.

Last up, I wanted to share with you a couple of cards Priscilla recently made. With the number of kids, grand children, and close friends we have, Priscilla is kept very busy. I marvel at her talent and how the cards are unique and different. It gives her a great deal of joy making them. It's like giving a part of herself to the person receiving the card. You card makers know what I mean.

Happy  Birthday

Hau'oli La Hanau  -  using our wave stencil

That's all for now. I hope you all are having a great summer. If your in the area, stop by the Lazer Den and say "Hi".

Happenings at A Place in Time on June 13th, 2013

Good Afternoon Everyone,

This week we have family from San Francisco and the grandchildren from Lana'i visiting for a week. It's been a lot of fun and we all found ourselves at the beach on Saturday. I've been to the beach more in the last 7 months (since we downsized the store) than in the 7 years we operated out of the old Craig's Bakery. Life is so very good and I see the blessings every day.

Fran's class is next week - Saturday, June 22nd (1:30 - 3:30pm). The class is almost full with one seat remaining due to a cancellation. If your interested in taking the class, please give me a call. The empty seat wont be there long. The cost is $23.00. Fran stopped by the Laser Den yesterday and dropped off her sample. As you know, the name of the class is Christmas in June. You will be making a beautiful gift box that contains Christmas cards and gift tags. It's all tied together with a Christmas bow and there is a pen included that complements everything. It will be a nice gift for someone special. The supplies you will need to bring is as follows: Paper trimmer, Scoring tool/bone folder, Scissors, Adhesive of your choice, Crop-a-Dile, Foam tape (3 dimensional tape), 3 daubers or sponge for ink application, a piercing tool, A Place in Time Christmas Tree Stencil (#PL557), Stickles: Gold, Patina, and Christmas Red, Tim Holtz distress Ink in Black Soot or other black ink pad, SU Primrose Petals Ink pad ( or similar colored ink pad), VersaColor Bamboo ink pad (or similar colored ink pad). That's all. Swing by the Den if your want to see the sample.

Fran's Christmas in June

Fran's class in May was a full house

I thought I would show you a tag Priscilla recently made. Perhaps it will give you a few creative ideas

.

Also, we're working on a couple of new stencils - a Gecko and a Sand Dollar. I'll post them on the blog once they are ready for production.

That's all for now.... I'll see you tomorrow,

Happenings at A place in Time on May 13,2013

Good Morning Everyone,

As promised, Fran dropped off her sample of what you will be doing in her Prima Fairy Bell Minin Album class on Saturday, May 25th. The challenge for me was to capture the beauty of her creation with the camera. The photos I have for you do not truly show the creativity that Fran has put into this album. There are flip pages, pockets, hidden pull out cards, and a creative way that the album folds and unfolds. When you see the actual sample, the first thing that will happen is a smile of wonder will cross your face. If you have the time, please come by the Lazer Den to see for yourself. As of this writing, the class is almost full, with one seat remaining. The following is a list those items you will need to bring to the class...it's a long one.... paper trimmer, scissors, scoring tool (aka bone folder), Scor-Pal or equal; Crop-a-dile, Tacky Liquid Glue or very strong 1/4" tape, Tim Holtz Distress Ink Walnut Stain optional, Sponge applicator or similar for the ink, Glossy Accents, Crystal Stickles, ruler, pencil or pen, Border punch of your choice (Fran used Fiskars Scallop in the sample), tweezers and a wire cutter. I told you it was a long list....The cost of the class is $28.00.

FRONT COVER

Interior flip page and hidden pocket with a surprise pull out card

Interior page

The Album unfolds in multiple directions

I tell people that I never know from day to day what we might find ourselves engraving. Did you know that we can engrave rocks? Polished river rocks ... that is. You can find them at the local nursery's and they come in 5 pound bags. They are polished and the engraving will be be white. I think it makes a perfect surprise gift. People can use them in the garden, a fish tank, or just as a paper weight on a person's desk.
I'm sure that you can come up with other uses. I think they're  kind of cool.

Happenings at A Place in Time on M ay 3, 2013

Good Afternoon Everyone,

It's May and you can feel the heat beginning to crank up. We find ourselves turning the air conditioning on in the Laser Den a bit earlier now - especially when the trade winds have disappeared. Recently, we had solar panels installed on the roof and it's nice to see the electric meter turning backward (even with the A/C running). That decision actually led to a recent laser job we just completed. Electrical inspectors require that all the equipment be clearly labeled. We submitted a bid and the next thing we knew we were making approximately 750 labels of various sizes. It was a nice job and we are looking forward to their next Purchase Order. If there is anyone who is thinking about having a solar panel system installed, please give me a call. I can give you a great recommendation.

For those of you that have been by the Laser Den recently or attended a class, you probably have seen our new stencils. "Clockworks" uses the popular gears motif and gives you a lot of flexibility when making a card. You can use any of the stenciling techniques - I would use black embossing paste and mica powders, but I'd want to try the air brush also.

Clock  Works

A second stencil we designed was the "Footprints". It's intended to be used as a subtle background on your project, but as with most stencils, you can use a single foot print if you want. It's a great stencil and on the "cute meter" it rates very high. Fran is anxious to use them both in an upcoming class she will be teaching.

Footprints

Speaking of Fran, her class on April 27th had to be cancelled because of illness. She's feeling better now and the April 27th class has been rescheduled for Saturday May 25th. It will be a Mini-Album and Fran says I should have the sample by this Monday (May 6th). As soon as I do, I'll put it in my next Blog. Seven people are signed up already and there are a few seats left. If you interested please give me a call. The cost is $28.00.

Fran is also scheduling classes for June and July. On Saturday (June 22nd), Fran will be having a class she has titled " Christmas in June". Two people have signed up. Details will be forthcoming. On July 27th, Fran will have another of her popular card classes using Prima's "A Nature Garden" collection. Give me a call if your interested in either class. When I see Fran on Monday I'll ask her for additional information. Times? Costs? etc .... You know ..."nothing but the facts"

That's all for now and I'll see you tomorrow,

Happenings at A Place in Time on April 3, 2013

Good Morning Everyone,

Yesterday was a perfect day in Kailua. The weather was cool and crisp in the morning and the the warmth in the afternoon made it a perfect beach day. The only trouble was I didn't have time to go to the beach. Oh well.. the beach is always there.

I wanted to update the last Blog. The cost for Priscilla's class on April 14th ( "Let's Face It, Coloring Can Get Hairy") is $20.00. You can save $10.00 on the cost of the class if you opt to buy any of the Copic Pen Sets that we have in stock. Two of the pen sets are specifically for coloring people. We also have one left of Copic's 25th Anniversary Set. The class is almost full - there is one seat remaining. Give me a call if you are interested.

Something new that is the process of being designed is our new website. Since the closing of our larger store, almost everything on the old website has changed. This is going to be exciting time for us. We are fortunate to know someone that designs websites for a living and I'm like a child at Christmas time waiting to see what he will create. One new thing that you find on the new website: People will be able to purchase our stencils and templates on line. We will also be able to let more people become aware of our laser engraving service. My goal is to grow the business until the demand requires that we purchase a second laser machine and are forced to expand out of my Laser Den. Then Priscilla can take over the Laser Den and she can once again have a nice place to craft.
We all can dream can't we!

That's all for now..... See you tomorrow

Happenings at A Place in Time on March 28, 2013

Good Morning Everyone,

March is winding down on a high note. Fran's class (Ningyogami) is this Saturday and she has a full class of 10 people. Classes are always an exciting time with a lot of laughter and friends sharing their knowledge. I know Fran is thinking about her next class in April. I'll ask her what she is planning and let you know in the next Blog. Ha.. If history holds true, the class will be half full after the class this Saturday. Classmates take advantage of being here to be the first to sign up, assuring themselves a place at the table.

For added fun in the month April, Priscilla is going to be teaching a coloring class. She will be passing on the techniques and secrets she has learned over the past year or so. For me, the hardest thing to color are people - hair, skin, shades shadows, etc. Priscilla will show you how. So break out your Copic pens and get ready.  The following is what Priscilla has to say about the class:

         Hello Fellow Crafters,

Easter is around the corner and we wish you a fun and colorful day with friends and family. Now is our children's turn to color and hide eggs for their children and to make sure ALL the eggs are found. The Easter Egg Hunt for us was always pandemonium when the kids were home, even the adults started to look for the "Most Valuable" egg.

I have since learned more about coloring and have been working on a Copic coloring class. Mark your calendars for a lot of fun.

Class Title: Let's Face It, Coloring Can Get Hairy
                          Date: Sunday, April 14th, 2013
                          Time: 1:00 - 3:00pm
                          Fee:  To be determined

I have a limited amount of pens (one color each) and encourage you to bring your pens (clearly marked with you name). It is best to have 3 pens in the same "color family" separated by 2 or 3 digits in numbers, ie.: B03, B05, B08. We will be concentrating doing only skin and hair. It is the technique on how to apply color that you will learn. If all you have are green, then you will have green people or green hair. It's ok - it's the technique that is important and if you learn it the color wont matter. It could be interesting.......

Supplies needed for the class: Pen or pencil, Copic Sketch color markers, E000, E00, E01, E11, E13. If you want - For Blondish hair bring Y's, Brownish hair bring E's, Black hair bring higher number W's and #100 Black. If you have only (1) number in the color, let's see if we can make it work with the same color layering.

Coloring skin and hair seems to be challenging for most people, including me! This is what the class will concentrate on entirely. I have experimented with different colors just because I (you) can. All you are going to do in thtis class is color, color, color.! There is no cutting, no pasting, no assembly, just coloring and writing down what you are doing. It will be a lot of fun.

To aide you, we have a limited supply of Copic Coloring Guide Books 1, 2, and 3 for sale. These books are excellent reference guides. Book 1 covers the different stroke techniques (a must have guide), Book 2 covers coloring Nature, and Book 3 covers coloring People. We also have a limited "People" pen sets of 12 and one (1) Limited Edition Copic Set of 36  for sale.

Are you ready to be amazed with your hidden coloring talent? Sign up early, there is limited seating and (2) seats have already been reserved! Call Bill at 808-261-2882 to register.

May the Crafting Spirit Be With You,

Priscilla

The following are photo's of some of the coloring samples. The samples are a lot better looking than my photos - so what else is new Ha!!!

COLORING HAIR AND SKIN COMBINED

COLORING  SKIN

I like it when Priscilla writes something for the Blog. I might also ad, if you want me to set any of the pen sets or coloring guides for you, just let me know. I'll find out what the class will cost later today. I'm sure it wont be expensive.

The last thing I have for you is a project Art and I were involved in for an aviation unit stationed on the island. Major Mike called and asked if we could engrave on the rocket head of an aircraft missile. Now that I have your attention, this is a replica in wood that someone turned on a lathe. Art did a fantastic job redrawing their unit emblem and the engraving was very impressive. The rocket head will be attached to the missile's actual base (the rocket base and head measures approx. 5ft long)  and will make a fantastic gift. I'm sure the Colonel will be very proud to have this in his display case.

One other specialty item we did was for the COB (Chief of the Boat) on the USS Greeneville. The COB's wife brought in 2 submarines cut out of  some beautiful Koa wood. I'm bound by secrecy to say any thing more.

That's all for now ...... I'll see you tomorrow,

Happenings at A Place in Time on March 20, 2013

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Tomorrow is the first day of spring and even better it's my wedding anniversary. Now you can't get any better than that. For those of you that are lucky enough to find that someone special to walk through life with, you like me are very blessed.

Fran dropped off the sample cards for the class scheduled for Saturday, March 30 from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. This will be a Ningyogami class.or Japanese paper dolls. Knowing how to make the dolls will allow you to add one more element to your creative card making skills. The paper Fran uses is from the Graphic 45 line and combines it with solid color card stock and several of the new stencils we have recently designed. As of this writing, the class is 1/2 full. Cost is $23.00. It would be a fun and relaxing way to spend a Saturday.

Items you will need to bring to the class:

Scissors, paper trimmer, tacky glue (you can use runner-type adhesive tape for some, but not all), mini glue dots (if you have), corner rounder, TH Distress Ink Walnut Stain (if you have), Scor-pal or other scoring tool, Japanese hole punch (if you have), Glossy Accents (optional or you could add Stickles), and ink pads in colors that look like bamboo green, lighter shade of brown and plum purple (if you have). Also bring 5 daubers or sponge to apply your ink.  the stencils used are Bamboo Background, Sakura Wheel, Bamboo 1, and Asian Fan.

Don't miss this class, you will walk away with four ready made cards that would be perfect for any occasion.

The last thing that we have for you are some new samples of our telescopic boxes. Those of you that came to our old store, will recognize the boxes. Here we used the Graphic 45 paper and it's looks fantastic. The beauty of the box is it's telescopic feature - it's impossible to lose the lid. These boxes make perfect party favors or as gift containers for that perfect someone in your life. We have the templates available and if you need a lot of boxes we can use the laser to cut them for you.

4 inch tall x 2 3/4 inch wide - people have asked me how much
this box will hold - it easily held my cell phone

2 3/4 inch cube

That's all for now.... See you tomorrow...

Happenings ar A Place in Time on February 27, 2013

Good Afternoon Everyone,

February is almost in the history books and March is just around the corner, Personally, I like March a whole lot. It's a whole easier for me to spell.

In my last Blog, I posted information regarding a class(s) that being held on Saturday, March 9th and Sunday, March 10th. Realm of Royalty - "Queen for a Day" and a "Queenly Journal". I received a couple photos of a sample crown that Debbie made for herself. This class is going to be a lot of fun as you create your own sign of royalty. Debbie's husband, Darrell took the photos and I can only imagine the fun people are going to have making theirs. For details about the times of the two classes, costs, and tools/materials required, please take a look at my Blog posted on February 23, 2013. I listed Debbie and Pam's e-mail addresses there also so that you can contact them directly.

Debbie's  Crown

I'll be giving Fran a call to see if I can get a few more details on her upcoming class on Saturday, March 30th. Ha! Not that it matters because people are already signing up.

The last thing that I have for you is a photo of the moon. This has nothing to do with A Place in Time, The Laser Den, Classes, the engraving jobs we've been doing or anything else in particular. Except, I like the moon. Especially the moon in Hawaii. These photos were taken about an hour before dusk - which means its still daylight. It fascinated me that you could see the moon with such clarity, even with a little cloud cover. Anyway, I thought you might like to see them.

Moon Over Kailua

That's all for now, have a super evening,

Happenings at A Place in Time on February 23, 2013

Good Morning Everyone,

Well, in a few minutes it will be class time and in the midst all the rain we've had in the past couple of days, I am now looking at blue skies with a few puffy white clouds. My Laser Den is about 5% the size of our former store and yet I like it more. My desk faces a large picture window and I can see everything that's happening outside. Fran's class is card making and if you haven't already, you can see the sample cards on my previous Blog.

Realm of Royalty - I just received the word that we are going to hosting an all day workshop on Saturday, March 9th, from 9:00am until 5:00pm. Then on the following day, Sunday, March 10th, you will be introduced to Altered Book Techniques - What's it all about?.It will also start at 9:00am and go to 5:00pm.

Both classes are being conducted by Debbie West and Pam Yee. They will provide bottled water and please feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. There are also a few places with-in walking distance to purchase lunch.

In the first class (March 9th) you will be a Queen For A Day.
     1. You will make a Queenly Journal, a gatefold book cover (taught by Pam Yee). Be sure and bring your own paper, ink or paint to customize your royal journal cover.
     2.  Queen for a Day, make your very own crown, taught by Debbie West. Think bling, jewels and "over the top"! What is your style? Start collecting small treasures, trinkets, and vintage jewelry pieces that you might want to incorporate into your unique headpiece. You can make great use of those unused earrings, pins and other costume jewelry pieces that you hang on to, but no longer wear! The "embellishment bar" will include jewels, die-cut shapes and many more treasures.

The Fee for the workshop is $100.00. Please save the date. Upon confirmation, Pam and Debbie will send you your supply/tool list. This class is also being offered at The Rubber Stamp Plantation on Saturday, March 2nd - same hours.

The second class, Sunday (March 10th) Altered Book Techniques will teach you 10 techniques which can be incorporated into greeting cards, journals, and altered books. Some of the techniques to be covered are: Waterfall Card; Mini Flag Book, Fan of Pockets; Creating a Niche; Tunnel Book; Blizzard Book; Iris Folds; etc.

The Fee for the 2nd class is $70.00. and upon confirmation Pam or Debbie will e-mail you your supply/tool list.

To sign up for either class - please e-mail Debbie (westd005@hawaii.rr.com) or Pam (pamyeealoha@gmail.com). They will send you a supply list and directions.

In my last Blog I spoke about the creation of a new stencil - The "Bamboo Background". I gave the proof to Priscilla and she created the card you see below. After embossing it on the Big Shot, Priscilla used a combination of golds, yellows, and greens to give it a fantastic look. This is the perfect stencil to use as a background and layer the sentiment ( mahalo, happy birthday, with sympathy, etc) on clear plastic over it. Very effective and very easy.

If you have any ideas for a stencil, I would like to hear from you. If it's something we can use in the Laser Den, you get your copy for free.

Last but not least, I wanted to share some pictures of our recent trek up to the Makapuu Light House. It's been at least 10 years since I last made the climb. So much has changed - I remember having to climb through a welded steel gate to access the trail. No parking lot...just park along side the road. Good friends Debbie and Darryl picked us up and off we went. We picked a cool Saturday and the strong winds made the hike all the more interesting. Now, I'm told that on a scale of 1 to 10 this hike would be a 2 maybe a 3? I know it wasn't difficult since I didn't feel the effects of it the next day. Maybe the next time we will shoot for a 3 or a 4.

Priscilla (with the hat) and I think this view of the windward coastline in one the best on the island

trying to capture the fury of the waves

I'm always fascinated by the different colors in the ocean's palette

The Lighthouse still looks pretty nice. I wonder who cleans it?

Every day I count my blessings - you see a major one standing next to me

Timing is everything in catching the wave

Don't know what kind of flowers these are, but I had to take a photo of the only spot of color on the hike

That's all for now... Have a great weekend... I'll talk with Fran and see when and what she is offering for a class in March.
