Happenings at A Place in Time on May 26th, 2012

It's Saturday.....

I have to add a quick note to everyone. Priscilla will be doing her Craft Snacks and Tidbits tomorrow (Sunday 1:00 - 4:00pm).  Priscilla tells me it will be a Father's Day fold -out card. Don't worry...... if you miss it tomorrow, Priscilla will be repeating it on Monday (Memorial Day). I haven't seen the sample yet, but I've seen her "playing" with the Copic pens and Dreamweaver's Humu stencil. It looks great. We will be open normal hours on Memorial Day. There is no charge for doing the Craft Snacks and Tidbits. Come in and enjoy the fun.

See you tomorrow......

Happenings at A Place in Time on May 25th, 2012

Aloha Friday Everyone,

I've been wanting to get this Blog out for the past couple of days, but the elements have been conspiring against me - or so it seems. I have some exciting news to share with you. For the past month or so we have been working on a new stencil - "The Mokulua Islands". You see this image in magazines, postcards, advertisements, etc. They, like Diamond Head, the Koolau Mountains, and the Waikiki shoreline, have become an icon - when you see them you automatically think of Hawaii. We thought it would be nice to make a stencil that represented the simple elegance of this Hawaiian landmark.. So, this weekend (Saturday, May 26th), we will be introducing a new stencil to our store. The results are very exciting and we hope that you will concur. I owe a great deal of thanks to those of you that "volunteered" to make samples using the new stencil. Each individual had no knowledge of what the others were doing. The results are fantastic - they are mounted on a display board and are available for you to review. You may take photos if you like. To make this Memorial Day weekend special, anyone purchasing the stencil will get an automatic 10% discount and if you have our store discount card you will receive an additional 10% discount. Thank you again to all of you that worked so hard in making the samples. I owe you "big time".

Now that's not the only new stencil that we will have available this weekend. Art Hiu, our "wizard" in the manufacturing department, has designed a stencil of a "Geisha Girl" that has an air of elegance and sophistication. Holding a parasol and fan, she seems to be contemplating the koi that are swimming in the pond at her feet. Art has done an outstanding job with this design and those of you that have been in the store recently can't wait for it to be become available. That will happen this Memorial Day weekend. We will be offering it at the same special pricing as "The Mokulua Islands" for this weekend only.

Art's  "Geisha Girl"

Deliveries to the store are beginning to happen on a fairly regular basis. Many of you are anxious for the arrival of "your favorite" die, paper, tool, etc. Have patience with us, we have a big store to "feed". Newest in the arrivals are some beautiful 3-D stickers that have a definite island flavor to them. Sea Creatures, Zoo Animals, Island Icons, Hula Girls, Old Hawaii, etc. For fun, Priscilla brought in a variety of Tattoos that you can place on your favorite body part. Don't worry - they are removable. I may be wrong, but I don't see why they can't be used on paper also. The Tattoos would had a very nice detail to the card or scrapbook page your working on.

The last thing I have for you isn't exactly a mistake, but I can't say we started out with the goal of making it also. Art and I collaborated in making a sample using the new "Mokulua Island" stencil. We both knew the trick of tearing paper to create a template for making waves or sky. What we were not prepared for was the result of using the Copic Pens with the template and the layering effect that made the template into something very stunning. I just had to use the result as an element on a card. How many of you make A10 sized cards? Not to many probably, because it allows only one card out of a 12" x 12" piece of paper. This design demanded it. I'm not even going to try and take a photo of it. I don't think I could ever capture it's vibrant colors and the way they play against the sheen of the paper. As I said above, sometimes you start out to make something and the "residue" becomes something special. I think it's one of the best cards we've ever made. I invite you take a look the next time you come to visit us.

That's all for now........ I'll see you tomorrow

Happenings at A Place in Time on May 15th, 2012

Good Evening Everyone,

How many of you took the time to see the full moon this month?  Priscilla and I saw it as we were walking back to the store from the local farmer's market. There was some cloud cover, but sometimes it can make for an interesting photo. I grabbed my camera and here is the result. They say that it will be a long time before we see a moon this large. The moon in Hawaii's night sky is really amazing. It's one of the things I appreciate in living in this beautiful state.

The past two weekends in the store have been very busy. On Sunday, May 6th, Fran invited 15 of her friends to the store for a day of fun and crafting. We set up extra tables and moved some fixtures so everybody had plenty of "elbow room". The result was a lot of fun and camaraderie between friends. The time went by so fast and we hope that they decide to do it again.  On the following Saturday, May 12th, Jodi brought her group in for a similar activity. This has become an annual event for them on Mother's Day. As they were "packing up", I heard requests for this to become a semi-annual event.

Fran and Priscilla  assist in one of the pre-planned projects

Activities like those above are a part of the vision we had when we opened the store. If you want to take advantage of our facilities for your group's party, please give us a call.

The next time your in the store you find the shelves have been restocked with paper from Bazzill. The colors Priscilla brought in cover a wide range of the color spectrum and you will have the choice between 12" x 12" or 8 1/2" x 11". Gorgeous papers and the names sound delicious. Tangerine, Mud Pie, Chiffon, Tapioca, Espresso, Watermelon, Cherry Cheesecake, and Maraschino. My favorite is "Two Scoops Mint Chip". Your going to love it.

Priscilla's Craft Snacks & Tidbits on Saturday, (May 5th), re-introduced a new template in the store. It's a sliding envelope that reveals hidden secrets. Next time your in the store ask for a demo. For those of you that aren't aware of it, Priscilla does a Craft Snacks & Tidbits every Sunday (1:00 - 4:00pm). It's FREE and all you need to bring is a smile and perhaps you will make some new friends.

Happenings at A Place in Time on May 4, 2012

Good Evening Everyone,

This will probably be the shortest Blog I've ever done. As I mentioned in my last Blog (May 3rd), Priscilla is hosting her "Craft Snacks and Tidbits" tomorrow (Sat. May5th - 1:00 - 4:00pm) in lieu of the the standard practice of Sunday afternoons. I promised that I would send a photo(s) of the planned activity as soon as it became available. What I'm going to show you is Priscilla in the process of assembling the various pieces and an almost finished sample. The finished project will have a sliding element that will display hidden treasures. Sound intriguing?  Your going to love it - I promise. Hope you can be here to play. I'll try and capture some "candid shots" tomorrow and include them in the next Blog.

The "Bouquet of Sliders" isn't finished yet, but you can see the  "windows"  where
treasures will magically appear.

That's all for now.... I will see you tomorrow.

Happenings at A Place in Time on May 3rd 2012

Good Evening Everyone,

Happy May.....and "May Day is Lei Day". Do you know how old this tradition of wearing a lei on May Day is?  I didn't until I looked it up. In 1928 a writer and poet, Don Blanding, wrote an article suggesting that a holiday be created centering around the Hawaiian custom of making and wearing a lei. People must of liked the idea because in 1929 it became an official holiday in the territory. I like the idea. It's one of the things that makes living here unique and special.

First up, I have to make everyone aware of a change in the schedule. Priscilla's "Craft Snacks and Tidbits", typically held on Sundays, has been moved up to Saturday, May 5th (1:00-4:00pm). Remember it's FREE. The theme is "Bouquet of Sliders". I've seen the prototype she's designing and I would describe it as being both "cute" and "elegant". Sorry, no photo. Come on in and make one. It would make a great gift for mom.

Speaking of "Craft Snacks and Tidbits", Priscilla's activity for last Sunday (Apr. 29th) was enjoyed by all involved. Combining colorful card stock, Sizzix flower dies, a Sister's stamp of a boy and his dog, you made a really cute gift card holder. The design is appropriate for Boy's Day or any other occasion. The boy hides behind the flower and then pops up to expose the special gift. The most fun was in using the Copic pens to color the stamped image of the boy. I offer the following photos for your review. We have a few pre-finished gift cards in the store in case you need one.

On Sunday, May 6th, Fran is hosting a special event in the store for a group of her friends. As a result, the store will be opening early (9:00am). We will be setting up extra tables to accommodate the 15 guests. I'm sure they are looking forward to spending a day of crafting and enjoying each others company. If this gives you an idea for a special event for your group of friends, please call Priscilla. The store will be open during the event, so come on in and see what's happening. Get here early, pick up what you need, and relax the rest of the day.

Mother's day is Sunday, May 15th. Priscilla will be off island celebrating with her mom, daughter, and grand children. I'll be tending the store. If you haven't come up with a gift idea for mom yet, may I suggest  A Place in Time Gift Certificate would be the perfect solution. You can get them in any amount and it takes the guess work out of what to get someone that seems to have everything. I may even have some "special" fortune cookies to give you.

NEW IN THE STORE: Priscilla has added to the already wide selection of paper by bringing in 8 1/2 x 11 text weight patterned paper. Not to be outdone, there are several new 12 x 12 papers - some text weight - some card stock. Do you like animal prints? We have it. Do you remember the "Color Me" card stock we had in the store several months ago. Priscilla brought in a new supply. Mist it, color it with ink pads and then wipe the color off. The pattern remains in it's original color and you now have the background color you want. I think the Tim Holtz ink pads would work especially well giving the paper a "distressed look". There are several new designs to choose from.

Also back in the store are the "Dazzles" peel and stick stickers. Butterflies, Stacked Roses, Greetings, Flowers, Ferns, Sympathy, etc. It's so easy. Just peel it and stick it and you have a great embellishment on any card or scrapbook page. Combine it with Liquid Pearls or Glitter for an extra appeal. We have samples on display.

Something really special happened last week. Grandpa Jim is a woodworker. He brought in a curly koa box he had made for Art to engrave. The box will be a gift for his soon-to-be 2 year old granddaughter. Imagine a gift that will be handed down through the generations. Now for the really cool part. Have you ever tasted freshly made taro. Jim and his wife Grace have a taro farm and Jim brought us a gift of taro wrapped in the traditional Hawaiian way of using ti leaves. I took the following photos for you to enjoy. Mahalo, Jim and Grace, for the special treat.

That's all for now..... I'll see you tomorrow
