Happenings ar A Place in Time on February 27, 2013

Good Afternoon Everyone,

February is almost in the history books and March is just around the corner, Personally, I like March a whole lot. It's a whole easier for me to spell.

In my last Blog, I posted information regarding a class(s) that being held on Saturday, March 9th and Sunday, March 10th. Realm of Royalty - "Queen for a Day" and a "Queenly Journal". I received a couple photos of a sample crown that Debbie made for herself. This class is going to be a lot of fun as you create your own sign of royalty. Debbie's husband, Darrell took the photos and I can only imagine the fun people are going to have making theirs. For details about the times of the two classes, costs, and tools/materials required, please take a look at my Blog posted on February 23, 2013. I listed Debbie and Pam's e-mail addresses there also so that you can contact them directly.

Debbie's  Crown

I'll be giving Fran a call to see if I can get a few more details on her upcoming class on Saturday, March 30th. Ha! Not that it matters because people are already signing up.

The last thing that I have for you is a photo of the moon. This has nothing to do with A Place in Time, The Laser Den, Classes, the engraving jobs we've been doing or anything else in particular. Except, I like the moon. Especially the moon in Hawaii. These photos were taken about an hour before dusk - which means its still daylight. It fascinated me that you could see the moon with such clarity, even with a little cloud cover. Anyway, I thought you might like to see them.

Moon Over Kailua

That's all for now, have a super evening,

Happenings at A Place in Time on February 23, 2013

Good Morning Everyone,

Well, in a few minutes it will be class time and in the midst all the rain we've had in the past couple of days, I am now looking at blue skies with a few puffy white clouds. My Laser Den is about 5% the size of our former store and yet I like it more. My desk faces a large picture window and I can see everything that's happening outside. Fran's class is card making and if you haven't already, you can see the sample cards on my previous Blog.

Realm of Royalty - I just received the word that we are going to hosting an all day workshop on Saturday, March 9th, from 9:00am until 5:00pm. Then on the following day, Sunday, March 10th, you will be introduced to Altered Book Techniques - What's it all about?.It will also start at 9:00am and go to 5:00pm.

Both classes are being conducted by Debbie West and Pam Yee. They will provide bottled water and please feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. There are also a few places with-in walking distance to purchase lunch.

In the first class (March 9th) you will be a Queen For A Day.
     1. You will make a Queenly Journal, a gatefold book cover (taught by Pam Yee). Be sure and bring your own paper, ink or paint to customize your royal journal cover.
     2.  Queen for a Day, make your very own crown, taught by Debbie West. Think bling, jewels and "over the top"! What is your style? Start collecting small treasures, trinkets, and vintage jewelry pieces that you might want to incorporate into your unique headpiece. You can make great use of those unused earrings, pins and other costume jewelry pieces that you hang on to, but no longer wear! The "embellishment bar" will include jewels, die-cut shapes and many more treasures.

The Fee for the workshop is $100.00. Please save the date. Upon confirmation, Pam and Debbie will send you your supply/tool list. This class is also being offered at The Rubber Stamp Plantation on Saturday, March 2nd - same hours.

The second class, Sunday (March 10th) Altered Book Techniques will teach you 10 techniques which can be incorporated into greeting cards, journals, and altered books. Some of the techniques to be covered are: Waterfall Card; Mini Flag Book, Fan of Pockets; Creating a Niche; Tunnel Book; Blizzard Book; Iris Folds; etc.

The Fee for the 2nd class is $70.00. and upon confirmation Pam or Debbie will e-mail you your supply/tool list.

To sign up for either class - please e-mail Debbie (westd005@hawaii.rr.com) or Pam (pamyeealoha@gmail.com). They will send you a supply list and directions.

In my last Blog I spoke about the creation of a new stencil - The "Bamboo Background". I gave the proof to Priscilla and she created the card you see below. After embossing it on the Big Shot, Priscilla used a combination of golds, yellows, and greens to give it a fantastic look. This is the perfect stencil to use as a background and layer the sentiment ( mahalo, happy birthday, with sympathy, etc) on clear plastic over it. Very effective and very easy.

If you have any ideas for a stencil, I would like to hear from you. If it's something we can use in the Laser Den, you get your copy for free.

Last but not least, I wanted to share some pictures of our recent trek up to the Makapuu Light House. It's been at least 10 years since I last made the climb. So much has changed - I remember having to climb through a welded steel gate to access the trail. No parking lot...just park along side the road. Good friends Debbie and Darryl picked us up and off we went. We picked a cool Saturday and the strong winds made the hike all the more interesting. Now, I'm told that on a scale of 1 to 10 this hike would be a 2 maybe a 3? I know it wasn't difficult since I didn't feel the effects of it the next day. Maybe the next time we will shoot for a 3 or a 4.

Priscilla (with the hat) and I think this view of the windward coastline in one the best on the island

trying to capture the fury of the waves

I'm always fascinated by the different colors in the ocean's palette

The Lighthouse still looks pretty nice. I wonder who cleans it?

Every day I count my blessings - you see a major one standing next to me

Timing is everything in catching the wave

Don't know what kind of flowers these are, but I had to take a photo of the only spot of color on the hike

That's all for now... Have a great weekend... I'll talk with Fran and see when and what she is offering for a class in March.

Happenings at A Place in Time on February 17, 2013

Happy Sunday Everyone,

Did you ever notice how people move through the year at different paces. The employee focuses on getting to the weekend and keys on "Hump Day (Wednesday) and "Aloha Friday". The minister's focus is on Sunday and the message he will deliver in the sermon. CPA's - their attention is on April 15 and the quarterly reports. Stores move through the year based upon the seasons and focus their advertising and merchandise accordingly. Over the years I have changed. In college I focused on the reviews of my architectural designs. In Viet Nam my attention was on my men and mission. I lived one day at a time. Afterward as a civilian and an employee I was on learning everything involved in being a general contractor. Weekends were my time to escape with my horse and explore the surrounding hills. When I opened my own company all the days were the same. The work and stress was always there. It was then that I discovered Hawaii and it was the one place I could go and relax. Moving to Hawaii and opening the store here - there was never a day off. In a way I could have been living anywhere because my world was the store. Now that we've downsized, I'm just as busy but I now have the weekends and I feel like I'm finally living in Hawaii. Life is so good. And I feel very blessed.

Ok... back to the Blog. Fran's class is coming up this Saturday (February 23rd) and it has been expanded by an extra 1/2 hour - 1pm - 3:30pm. The cost is $23.00. The class is more than 1/2 full, but there are still a few seats available. Fran got the samples to me and as promised - here they are for your review. Sometimes I think there is a Menehune in my camera though because it sees the samples differently than I do. Where I see green, it sometimes sees blue. Maybe I should take a class on the use of the camera. Anyway, one of the photos is not  a true likeness of the cards you will be making. And these cards you will truly enjoy making. They are some of the best I've seen. It's exciting to see how Fran has incorporated two of our new stencil designs into her cards (Sakura background and Bamboo. It will show you that you can use just a small part of a stencil and not the whole image.  Fran has done a fantastic job. The supplies to bring are: Paper trimmer, scissors, adhesive tape and glue, Versamark Watermark Stamp Pad, tweezers, piercing tool and pad (you can use an old mouse pad, paper flower shaping tool or ball stylus, small glue dots (if you have), a scrimping tool (if you have), and a gold pen (if you have), and a Majestic Purple Liquid Pearl.

The paper Fran used Bazzil's 12x12 solid colors and Graphic 45's "Birdsong" designer paper. It makes for a strong, rich, elegant combination.

As mentioned,  my camera saw blue when in reality the card background is more of a light teal.

This past week in our engraving activity we found ourselves doing a wide variety of things. We engraved wood plates as welcome aboard gifst for incoming personnel to VPU-2, a koa urn, name badges for the Four Seasons Hualalai, an acrylic award for the Four seasons Lana'i, name plates for a trophy that a local kennel club has been using for the past 50 years. It's been a busy week.

That's all for now...... have a great week.... I'm looking forward to it.

Happenings at A Place in Time on February 10, 2013

Good Morning Everyone,

Today's Blog is special because you don't have to just listen to me. Priscilla recently made a Journal and I asked her to write something to get your creative juices primed.

PRISCILLA'S JOURNAL  - FRONT COVER

"Birdsong" by Graphic 45 is a very dynamic design; beautiful double sided paper usable for most any project you have in mind. I wanted to make a mini journal and I also wanted to "play" with a new tool from We Are Memory Keepers called the "Cinch". I guarantee your going to love this new tool. So, I proceeded to "stage" the supplies I would need to make my journal.

Paper: Birdsong by Graphic 45 - Jasmine Dream, Harmony, Good Fortune, and Enlightenment
Bazzill:  Raven (black). Rain (medium teal), Jubilee (purple)
           Stamps: Graphic 45 - Birdsong
Stencils: A Place in Time - Falling Sakura PX616, Large Sakura PL-564, Large Koi PX620
           Extra Heavy Chipboard
Ink Pads: Color Box Lime, Staz On Stone Gray, Memories Mermaid Teal, Versa Color Orchid and                       Cardinal, Delicate Golden Glitz
Adhesive: Scotch Quick Dry Glue, Scotch Removable Tape, Double sided tape from Scor-pal
Tools: Scor-pal, EK Success Border Punch, We Are Memory Keepers "Cinch" Binding Tool and .75" wire, 12" metal ruler, Straight cutter, Scissors, Pencil w/ white eraser, and Dreamweaver stencil brushes.
           Miscellaneous: Small flat paper bag

Once you start it is hard to stop, who wants to cook dinner at a critical design time of your journal? Covering the chipboard was effortless with the beautiful paper. To choose what will adorn the front of the cover was more agonizing; so many wonderful choices. I really wanted to use the border punch by EK Success; It allowed the background paper to show through. The fun part was re-purposing my little flat brown paper bag I saved. By folding the paper bag in half it created pockets which you then cover with the  "Bird Song" paper. Then I needed a couple bigger pockets for tags or photos. Creating designed "plain paper" was so fun with the Bird Song stamps and A Place in Time's stencils. Assembling my work of art was effortless with the We Are Memory Keepers Cinch Tool. It punched through the covered chipboard like butter and closed the wires around the journal with ease.

Well, I better start my birthday cards and work on my Copic coloring class samples. Call Bill if you want to see the Birdsong paper or the supplies I used.

The following are pictures I took of Priscilla's Journal. It's really nice and the colors Priscilla chose are perfect for her.

We've been busy in the "Lazer Den" also. We are in the process of designing a new line of KOA jewelry for a local retailer. Most people, when they think of a laser machine the automatic response is engraving. It is also a cutting tool as well. A couple of months ago we used the laser to cut out the shape of the Big Island for the Four Seasons Hualalai to use on their breakfast buffet line. It's also used to make our line of stencils. We have colored sheets of vinyl with an adhesive back that we can make stickers with or lettering that you can you on your car windows.

Our newest stencil we call the "Heart Branch". I designed it not to just be used for Valentine's Day but for any occasion where you want to say something special. The design uses a basic simple heart, out of which is growing the branch of a tree. Dangling from the branch are several hearts. In my mind I saw the symbolism that out of your love (heart) grows the many things that you cherish. It may be your family, your dreams, your values, etc. I hope you like it. If sales are any indication people love it.

HEART BRANCH STENCIL  -  PL-570

The next stencil we've been working on is a Bamboo Background. As soon as Priscilla has tested it and I've made any changes necessary I'll put it on the blog.. If you have any ideas for a stencil, let me know and I can make it for you.

Well, that's all for now. Enough work on a Sunday.

See you tomorrow,

Bill

Happenings at A Place in Time on January 28th, 2013

Good Morning Everyone,

Yesterday, Saturday January 27th, was a special day. We hosted our first class since "downsizing" the store last September. We were just shy of one person for it to be a full class. That's a good sign that the interest in classes hasn't waned during the last few months. A lot of that has to do with the creativity that Fran Kawakami brings to her classes. Everyone was smiling at the end of the class and asking "What's next"?
Everybody looks very intense as they work on Fran's "Songbird" Mini Album

The "Tulip" Ott-Lite has a flexible neck so it can point straight up and reflect the light off the ceiling or bend to give you a concentrated light on your project

You ask "What's Next? Fran will have a class on Saturday, February 23rd - 1:00 to 3:00pm. It will be a card making class and, and among other elements, it will include using the Graphic 45 Birdsong line of paper and embellishments. I think Fran will also be using some of our newest stencil designs. As I get more information I will post the samples, supplies, and other details on the Blog. Please give me a call if you would like to sign up. Fran's popularity is such that the class is already 1/3 full. There are 6 seats remaining.

After the class, people had the opportunity to do a bit of shopping and choose from the Graphic 45 Birdsong line of paper, stamps, chipboard cutouts, 12x12 and 8x8 pads of paper. From "Prima" we have embellishments in bling, flowers, and pearls. You can also chose from an assorted selection of 12x12 or 81/2x11 solid colors. For the Copic pen users, we have a few sets of 12 of the "people colors" and the 25th anniversary limited edition set of 36. Looking for a good deal, we have the copic pen sets on sale.

A new item we have available for you to pre-order is a book binding tool from We R Memory Keepers. It's called "The Cinch" - it's simple to use, doesn't take up a lot of space, and isn't too bad on the pocket book. It will bind from .325 inches to 1 1/4 inches wide. Priscilla gave we a glimpse of class she will conducting in the near future that employs the use of this tool. The sample is "down right" beautiful. I can't wait to take a picture once it's finished and put it on the Blog..

Another item for you to pre-order is the Ott-Lite Tulip desk lamp. This is truly a beautiful looking lamp as well as being very functional for your crafting projects. You can see what they look like in the photo of Fran's class.

The last thing that I have for you today are the samples of our newest stencil - "The Koi". Those that attended Fran's class liked it so much that they reduced my inventory by 50%. Not bad for only being available for 1 day. The "Koi" is sized to fit on an A6 card. One of the nice things about making our own line of stencils is that should you want it made larger of smaller we can customize it for you. We are open Monday thru Friday, 10:00am - 6:00pm. So come on by and take a look - you can enjoy lunch at "The Shack" if you want. We will also mail the stencils to you should you decide not to make the drive to Kailua. Please give me a call to let me know your going to pay me a visit. I'll show you everything we have.

You have to come by the store to see the samples. The photo doesn't  pick up the embossed look of this Koi and the one shown below. The stencil works great in the Big Shot. Play with air brush, embossing pastes, ink pads, etc. It's fun and I find it relaxing.

Have a great week and I'll see you tomorrow,

Happenings at A place in Time on January 14th, 2013

Good Evening Everyone,

Have you ever had one of those days where you plan on doing something and are looking forward to it. I put up the siding on the "Laser Den" this weekend and was planning on painting it today. It's looking nice, but it needs that final finishing touch. So, what does it do today? Rain and when it got tired of doing that it rained harder. And then even harder yet. Ha! The drainage system that Scott worked on does a great job. Tomorrow will be another day.

Fran stopped by late today and dropped off the sample for her upcoming class "Bird Song Mini Album" on Saturday, January 26th (1:00 - 3:00pm). Those of you that have already signed up are going to really enjoy making the album. My favorite part is the exterior curved binding. It's unique and very elegant. The interior is a "can't miss" because the paper being used is the Graphic 45 "Bird Song". Stunning colors and you can't wait to turn the pages. Fran's design has you making pockets so the pages aren't permanently covered. The cost of the class is $28.00 payable to Fran by cash or check (no credit cards). Before or after the class you will have the opportunity to "shop" and select from the "Bird Song" line of paper and embellishments. Any purchases can be made by credit card. The supplies and tools you will need to bring are as follows:

Very strong type of adhesive to bind the album (Aleene's Tacky glue, Sobo glue or Terrifically Tacky Tape)
You may use another type of adhesive of your choice to adhere the inside of the album (ie. tape runner or other).
Pencil
Ruler
Scissors
Border Punch of your choice. (Fran used EK Success Flourish Scroll)
Scoring tool of your choice (Scor-pal, etc.)
Bone scoring tool
Paper Trimmer

As of this writing there is one seat left, so call me if you would like to take the class.

Front Exterior of "Bird Song" Mini Album

Interior of  "MIni Album"

I have the sample of the Mini Album in the "Laser Den". If you have the opportunity, stop by and you can review it for yourself. We are located at 1079 Liku Street, Kailua. Directions: Take Keolu Drive to the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center (Safeway, Starbucks, Ben Franklin) and The Shack. Turn onto Hele Street (a "T" intersection with Keolu Drive), go 1 block and turn right onto Liku Street. We are located on the right side of the street and the address is clearly marked on the mailbox. It's a white single story house and my Acura is typically parked out front. In my next Blog I'll include a map.

Please give me a call if I can answer any questions.
