Happennings at A Place in Time on 5-24-15

Aloha Everyone,

I received an email from Fran this morning containing the details on her upcoming class on Saturday, May 30, 1:30 - 3:30pm. The cost is $23.00 and I know there are a few seats still available. The supplies you will need to bring to class include: Tacky glue, adhesive of choice, paper trimmer, scissors, bone folder and scoring tool (small size is ok), corner rounder, ruler (Fran recommends Tim Holt idea-ology), pen or pencil, and a crop-a-dile. You will be making the album only. The punchart from the last class will be available for purchase. Take a look at the photos below, Fran has done a really great job. You will be very pleased using this album as a gift or just for yourself. Give me a call if you would like to sign up.

We've engraved a few more flasks since my last Blog. The stencils we designed when we had the store in the Old Craig's Bakery are coming in handy. We engraved the Petro Family on one of the flasks. On the opposite side we engraved the Royal Hawaiian Seal. The look on the flask came out very nice.

The actual engraving is much nicer than my humble photo taking ability

That's all for now. Please give me a call if you have any questions.

See you on Saturday,

Bill

Happenings at A Place in Time

Aloha Everyone,

It's a bright and beautiful Thursday morning and it reminds me of a day in Oregon when it doesn't rain. In my last Blog I mentioned that Priscilla loves gardening. I found a photo of a Japanese Lace leaf maple that we had in our yard and I thought it would be fun to share.

Fran's class is on the 30th (Saturday) and there is still a few seats left. She emailed me this morning and said that her sample would be finished this weekend. As soon as I receive the photos I'll post them on the Blog. Please give me a call if you would like to sign up for the class.

Around my Laser Den, I have been kept busy with a variety of projects. Lately, a lot of people have been bringing in their Hydro Flasks for engraving. Fran came by and surprised me with a gift of a Hydro Flask in the pint size. I had not seen them before and naturally had to test it for engraving. The flask color is a beautiful golden brown. I chose to engrave one our stencil designs (Palm Moon B). I think the engraving turned out great. You can be your own judge.

The engraving is actually silver in color. The tone on the photo shows the reflection from my maple desk top.

Every once in awhile we get a request for a plaque. We don't carry brass in the shop, but we do carry a brushed gold acrylic. I prefer it because it won't tarnish or turn green with time. We will cut and engrave the labels to your specification. You can see a sample that we did for one organization below.

Name tags remain a large part of the work we do. Recently, I did a name tag using the black acrylic and gold fill. I think the combination of the black and gold has an elegant look.

Most of the name tags we do are still made out of the wood we carry in the shop. I had a call this week - more name tags for officials associated with USA Swimming. I've completed the initial order of 68 and am waiting for the lists from Kauai and the Big Island.

Because of the times we live in, I'm reluctant to show things we've done because it has a personal information on it.  The wood plate and the Hydro Flasks we did for the tennis coaches show the engraving without the names.

My thanks to Art for showing me how to edit in Photoshop and to Darryl for showing me
how to use the Macro setting on the camera for better/clearer close ups.

That's all for now. I'll follow up in a couple of days with Fran's information.

Have a great day,

Bill

Happenings at A Place in Time

Aloha Everyone,,

In a recent Blog, I showed the image of a Ram stencil that Art had designed for his sister. His idea was to have it engraved on a Hydro Flask as a surprise gift. Priscilla took that same image as a stencil and created a greeting card. I think that you will agree with me that she did a fantastic job.

It's a nice use of ink, embossing powder, and heat gun. It's easy and,
depending on the colors you choose, it works for both man or woman.

One thing that you may not know is that Priscilla has a passion for gardening. When we lived in Oregon she was somewhat spoiled in that she had about a 1/4 acre to work with. She did a wonderful job. The array of different plants, the wonderful scents that filled the air, and the music of flowing water was a pleasant surrounding. One of my favorite plants was the variety of bamboos. She still likes to get her hands dirty, but doesn't always have the time. Recently, as birthday gift to her mother they went to a local nursery and chose plants and pots. Mom wanted to see them placed in the front yard. The following are photos of the result of their effort.

It was only a couple of days after planting that we were seeing the results. Mom was very pleased with her 89th birthday gift. She's already planning on buying more pots.

That's all for now. As information comes in regarding Fran's class I'll keep you posted.

Have a great week,

Bill

Happenings at A Place in Time on 4-21-15

Aloha Everyone,

It's almost time for Fran's class. This Saturday, the 25th, will be a fun day. So, if you haven't signed up yet I believe there is still a seat or two available. Give me a call.

I always have to smile a bit - you see after class is over and the tables are cleared it takes Priscilla about 1 day to fill them up with her crafting projects. Mind you, that's 2 eight foot tables. And they stay full until morning of the next class in the following month. I figure those tables are among the best investments we ever made.

In my last blog I mentioned that we are engraving black acrylic and then applying a gold fill. I thought you might like to see another sample of that technique.

The client usually wants their logo on the name tag and we have to covert the image into the language that the laser recognizes. That usually means I have to redraw the logo on the computer. It's fun and challenging at times. Recently, we did a name tag for a school teacher at Enchanted Lake Elementary. The photo below is my black and white drawing that the laser will use to to engrave the wood name tag.

Our laser is a tool that can give an amazing amount of detail in the engraving. You can see that in the sample below of the Aztec Calendar. The calendar is a sample I got from Epilog - the person who drew the calendar is probably still recovering from his task :)

I may have mentioned in a previous Blog, that we recently replaced (with Art's able assistance) the laser tube in our machine. It was a great decision because it is now allowing us to do things we couldn't do in the past. Ha! I've had to relearn the speed and and power settings. Guess you can teach an "old dog" something new. Recently, a friend asked if we could engrave the Chinese symbol on a chop. I think I found a solution and that's what we do in the Laser Den - find solutions.

That's all for now. We're currently working on our Web Site, Facebook, and other elements so that we can reach and help more people. I'll keep you updated as we proceed.

Have a great day,

Bill

Happenings at A Place in Time on 4-14-15

Aloha Everyone,

It's the middle of April and I've been extremely busy in my Laser Den. Our regular customers like the Four Seasons, Eco Solar, Starbucks, and Kumu Kit keep us busy with requests for name tags and electrical labels. Most recently, we done some work for individuals from the Queens Hospital, the Rotary Club of Lana'i and Subway. You may see some of our newest name tags being worn by a few people at 1st Hawaiian Bank in Kailua. I am always looking for something new and Sara at Aloha Salad got me to thinking about chalkboard name tags. Some companies use them because of a high turnover in employees. I experimented with a glossy black Acrylic and found that it can be engraved and also written on using a gold leafing pen. It provides the best of both worlds with a gold filled logo and names in gold also. An employee leaves, just erase the name and reuse the name tag. So far the people I've shown it to seem to be very pleased. Look for it over at the Starbucks in Kailua also.

It's fun for me to redrawn a company's logo in the language of the laser so that it can be engraved

Black Acrylic with the Gold Fill - I think it has a real elegant look

This name tag "proof" was done in the black acrylic - everything that you see in black was gold filled
And you might recognize the signs we engraved on Koa for Lanikai Juice

Now for the real purpose of this Blog entry. Fran's Next Class - it will be a two-part class. The first segment will be Saturday, April 25th. You will be creating cute punch art.  There is still room and you can RSVP by emailing Fran at scrapnhawaii@hotmail.com or calling me at 261-2882. The 2nd class will be on Saturday, May 30th. In that class you will create an album for the punch art. You can sign up for one class or both. The cost is $20.00. The cost for the May 30th class is yet to be determined.  The following items are what you will need to bring to class: black pen, white pen, scrapbooking chalk, scissors, tacky glue (and toothpicks), crop-a-dile, and of course your imagination. Optional items include: Dreamweaver's Picasso. You might also want to bring some "bling" and/or dimensional tape for the punch art.

This is so cute it makes you want to smile.
Well, that's all for now. Please give me a call if I can help you with anything.

Have a great day,

Bill

HAPPENINGS AT A PLACE IN TIME on 3-26-15 PART "B"

Aloha Everyone,

I couldn't post all the photos on the previous Blog so here we go.

Here are couple more photo's from Art.

When you visit me the next time you can also see a couple of models that Art has given me. Yoy may even see him helping me out.

Art  recently gave me a hand in installing a new laser tube in our engraving machine. After 10 years the old one was getting tired. The install can be done by one person but having that extra pair of hands sure makes it easier. An extra brain helps also in figuring out what the instructions really mean. Ha! Thank you Art. I am truly amazed at the difference in engraving the new tube provides. An engraving that was already highly detailed is even better now. Plus we can now do some things that we couldn't do before. How many of you have a Hydro Flask? I have found that they are very popular. Well, we can now engrave them and it's not expensive. I had to experiment and you can see the result below. On one side you have our design of the Mokulua Islands. On the other side (not shown) I engraved the Marine Corps emblem. We have a lot of images from the old store (stencils and stamps) that we can use to make a Hydro Flask very unique to the owner.

For our anniversary, I engraved a Dragon onto a blue flask for Priscilla. Sure am glad I married a Dragon. She makes every day a joy to look forward to.

That's all for now. Hope to see you on Saturday for Fran's class.

HAPPENINGS AT A PLACE IN TIME 3-26-15

Aloha Everyone,

Wow!  Has it been that long since my last post. Guess it has and I hope you all are still there. I should add to me new years resolutions list to be more diligent in posting. That said, we continue to be very blessed with good health and an active business.

There are a couple of things that I wanted to share with you. First, Fran is continuing to have classes on the last Saturday of each month. You can follow what she is doing on her Blog at "littlepaperstudio". Fran's class for this month is on Saturday March 28th. It's a card making class and you will see from the photos I've posted below, she done a great job creating some cards that anyone would enjoy making. Check her Blog or give me a call for the supplies you need to bring. The cost of the class is $23.00. There is still room in the class, so give me a call to sign up.

I like these cards because they have a universal design and can be used for anyone on different occasions. Make 2 or 3 of each and keep them in a file to be used when you just remembered you have to send somebody a card. No last minute rush. The other thing I like about them is that they are layered which gives them a dimensional feel. It's not just any old card you pick up at the store.

Secondly, people who come to the classes or drop by for engraving done in the Laser den often ask about Art. Well, he's still retired and takes good care of his mom and dad. He stops by the Laser den to visit and perhaps do some engraving for himself. As you may know, Art is a Master Model Maker. He has won many awards and has even been written up is several magazines that cater to model making. Most recently, he had a couple of entries at the Blaisdel for model makers. You can see his handicraft below:

The above is a 1966 Mustang GT-350. On this Art actually widened the body by 3 scale inches on each side. It also has a custom interior. I don't think Art ever makes what comes in the box. He's always making the model his own design.

The above is a 1937 Ford pick-up truck street rod. I would like one of these. For the truck, he used our laser to cut the wood for the truck bed, side stakes, and surfboard. He also widened the rear wheel fenders, chopped the roof, and custom made license plates for the truck. I believe the exhaust pipes he custom made also.

There are two more photos, but I guess this program limits the number I can post. Art's ability to get a glass smooth paint job is truly amazing.

I'll do a follow up Blog to complete other photos by Art and something I want to share with you,

Have a great day in this beautiful land that God created,

Bill
